Mr Moskeeto vs Buck Bumble

"In the intricate dance of nature, insects are the choreographers of biodiversity."

  - E.O. Wilson

Mr. Moskeeto, the blood-sucking Nemesis of the Yamada Family.

Buck Bumble, the Bee-Cyborg Hybrid and saviour of the insects.

The Bloom of 3D videogames brought us all sorts of Heroes and Adventures, but none are as brave as these two early 3D insects with wonky controls and varying quality fighting against threats much bigger than they are. One is a Mosquito trying to survive the next winter by terrorizing a poor family and sucking their blood. The other is a cybernetic enhanced Bee fighting against the evils that humans have indirectly caused with their pollution. Will Mr. Moskeeto survive this fight to continue his quest for blood? Or will Buck Bumble be victorious and live to fight for a better future? Find out in this insect Death Battle!

Thanks to Kaiser for most of the calcs.

Background

Mr. Moskeeto

Summer. Who doesn't like summer? Summer drives people crazy, and that makes people commit terrible acts. Take the harmless mosquito for example. It doesn't have enough time to do much during its one precious short life, yet with one swipe a human can snatch such a priceless life away without a second’s thought…

Is what would be the case for any ordinary mosquito. But this is about Mr. Moskeeto, or “Mister Mosquito” in the non PAL-versions of the game. A Mosquito with one simple goal: survive the winter. As the insect that bites people and makes them feel itchy, Mr. Moskeeto needs to suck blood to survive another winter and see a new spring. Blood sucking comes with big risks. Take the Yamada family. A small Japanese family consisting of the daughter, Rena. The mother, Kaneo. And the father, Konichi. This family would be what would give Mr. Moskeeto enough blood to survive the winter. They tried everything to keep the Mosquito away but it wouldn’t go. Plaguing the family to the point they completely indulge their house in Insecticides. Once the mosquito gathered enough blood it fled, leaving the Yamadas with some nasty bites to remember him by, they could however finally have peace…

Until next Summer arrives and someone decides to start a New Game+! Repeating the same events for yet another summer. After defeating the Yamadas a second time and leaving them traumatized to the point of them having nightmares about the Mosquito. The Yamadas decided to take a little vacation to Hawaii and visit the Brown family. Little did they know that Mr. Moskeeto was hiding inside one of the suitcases they took with them and started terrorizing them in Hawaii while the Brown family was being dealt with by an American chad of a Mosquito. But when the vacation of the Yamadas came to an end, they flew back to Japan leaving Mr. Moskeeto back in Hawaii, with one final scare he put on Konichi, by holding on to the plane's window, he flew into the horizon never to be seen again.

Buck Bumble

The year is 2010 in rural England. Everything seems normal on Earth… for us Humans at least. If you look closer you may find a not so ordinary situation developing within the Insect Kingdom. Near an abandoned chemical plant, the insect population has been rapidly declining thanks to a poisonous chemical spill that took place many years ago. Now, out of the spill, The Evil Herd has emerged. An insect super race that is planning to take over the garden and beyond. Led by their Queen, a Praying Mantis, they are bent on destruction of all to prove their superiority. As the Herd moves in millions of insects are slaughtered, this however goes unnoticed by humans due to the Herd replacing the dead insects.

The insects fled far and wide to find a way to fight back against the Herd and they have come to the conclusion that only one plan has even a sliver of a chance to beat the Herd and save the insects. Introducing: project BUCK. Project BUCK is a top secret Project developed by the most intelligent of Insects. The plan is to take a high-ranking volunteer veteran bee and genetically modify it to become what is essentially a Cyborg. This would make him strong enough to defeat the millions of Herd members and save the insects. At the public nest conference on September 4th 2010 the plan was revealed to the public and the volunteer picked was shown to be none other than Buck Bumble.

Buck is sent on missions to disrupt the Herds plans by doing various tasks such as cleaning out scouting troops, blowing up hidden bases, finding said hidden bases or protecting his own HQ from the Herd. While on his missions he ventured through the sewers to eventually find the Queen of the Herd and end their madness once and for all. After a fierce battle with the Queen, the Herd was finally defeated and the insect population slowly recovered, and it was all thanks to one Bee and dream.

Experience & Skill

Mr. Moskeeto

While it may not seem like it at first glance: Mr. Moskeeto is quite good at what he does. He is smart enough to use distraction that outsmart the yamadas to get them into positions that favour him. He also keeps up with the Yamadas in close quarter combat. The Yamadas are all generally very well trained in combat to the point of being able to use attacks like summoning rocks to fall on your opponent or small explosions. They are also very athletic, being able to do flips while simultaneously cooking food. Mr. Moskeeto also has been fighting against them for 3 years, giving him a good bit of experience against skilled opponents.

Buck Bumble

There is a reason Buck Bumble got chosen for the BUCK program. He was a high ranking veteran before joining the program. His Cyborg augmentations allow him to outsmart most foes as they help him develop tactics. Buck also has constant support from the geniuses that created the Program. These Insects are smart enough to defuse nuclear bombs in minutes as well as build bombs to destroy enemy bases.

Equipment

Mr. Moskeeto

Blood Containers

Simple Containers which represent Mr. Moskeetos thirst for Blood. Filling them lets you progress the level.

EX Tanks

Extra Blood Containers which can be found around the level. Filling them up allows Mr. Moskeeto to live on for another Summer.

Hearts

Collecting these will fill up Mr. Moskeetos life if he has been hurt in Battle or otherwise.

Heart Rings

The most common collectible, collecting 50 Heart Rings will give you one more heart to your health pool.

Food

As an insect, eating someone else’s food is nothing new. Collecting these items allows you to view tips for the game.

Buck Bumble

Blaster Pistol

your typical weak starting weapon. This small blaster shoots lasers in intervals. It's not the slowest weapon in the world, but also far from the fastest. It does have one advantage, it holds infinite Ammo. Not much else to say except that these lasers explode on impact and show force and thus are likely not light speed.

Plasma Buster

This weapon is everything the Blaster Pistol wants to be. It's stronger and has a better fire rate. Combining this with the fact that it holds the most ammo out of any weapon in the game (except the Laser Buster) means this is Bucks Jack of all traits.

Magnum

Slow and Powerful. This weapon is mostly used against big armored foes due to its very slow firing rate. It does pack quite the punch as it can kill most Herd troops in one shot.

Bombs

simple bombs Buck can throw. They are quite strong, however Buck can't carry a lot of these.

Laser Pistol

A more powerful version of the Blaster Pistol with the same fire rate.

Lock-on Pistol

This pistol fires shots that track down enemies. It's useful for taking out groups. It's not the strongest weapon but the fast firing rate makes up for it.

Stun Gun

This weapon doesn't do any damage but can incapacitate foes allowing Buck to pick them up.

Crossbow

It's a crossbow! Nothing special about it. It's quite weak but has the fastest fire rate in the game making it useful to deal with hordes of small enemies.

Tesla Gun

A gun that shoots electricity. It doesn't do a lot of damage but can damage multiple enemies in one shot. Its fire rate is quite slow.

Fly-by-Wire Rocket Launcher

It's an ordinary rocket launcher. Except that you control the missile. While you control it you are unable to move, making you an easy target.

Explosive Device

A really strong explosive device that Buck gets from his military. It can blow up big structures. If Buck hits anything while carrying this bomb it blows up and he dies. The bomb needs to be prepared in advance.

Honey Drop

These simple drops of honey refill Bucks health.

Abilities

Mr. Moskeeto

Mosquito Physiology

I'm sure we are all familiar with Mosquitos. They fly, they sting, they are quite annoying. All of this also applies to Mr. Moskeeto.

Pressure Points

Mr. Moskeeto seems quite proficient in Pressure Point Combat, being able to find them and use them to knock their opponent out by “relaxing” them. They also forget about Mr. Moskeeto after having their pressure points hit.

Resistances

Minor electricity resistance: The Yamadas place many traps for the mosquito inside their house, electrocutions are a part of them. And while Mr. Moskeeto still does damage from these traps, he takes them much better than any other insect would.

Minor insecticide resistance: Similarly, while insecticide does hurt him. He can survive it much better than an ordinary Mosquito would

Buck Bumble

Bee Physiology

The standard abilities of a bee, The flying, The eyes, Buck has everything and then some! Seems familiar?

Cybernetic Enhancements

As part of the BUCK program, Buck has gotten some Cybernetic Enhancements. He has the basic stuff such as being stronger than ordinary Bees. But he also has a learning software implemented which lets him learn the use of any weapon almost instantly and helps him with strategies mid fight. He can also carry much more than any ordinary bee thanks to Ammo compression technology. On top of this he has an enemy radar which shows him the rough location of enemies around him. The enhancements also let him communicate with HQ and HQ can teleport him into mission areas and teleport him out when the mission is done. Although HQ doesn't seem to teleport him out when in danger and strictly uses it when a mission is finished.

Resistances

Feats

Mr. Moskeeto

Overall

  • Survived 3 Summers against the Yamadas
  • Followed the Yamadas across the world
  • Sucked blood out of the Yamadas to the point of them forever being scared of Mosquitoes

Power

Speed

  • Average Mosquito flying speed is 1.5 miles per hour or 0.67 m/s
  • Sees humans in slow motion while manoeuvring around them. (Seen above)
  • Can disappear into the sky (5.36 m/s)

Durability

Buck Bumble

Overall

  • Is a Veteran
  • Was chosen by the military to become the saviour of the insects
  • Defeated the Herd and saved millions of insects

Power

Speed

  • Was stated to be able to fly at 8 miles per hour or roughly 3.5 m/s
  • Can evade shots from the Herd
  • Some of his weapons are likely as fast as real life human bullets.

Durability

  • Can survive Herd Units crashing into him and exploding (seen above)
  • Should be tougher than an ordinary bee thanks to the Skin armor implants.

Weaknesses

Mr. Moskeeto

Mr. Moskeeto has the average weaknesses of an insect. Bug Repellent and other traps will damage him but Mr. Moskeeto is not lured in by them. He also doesn't deal too well with strong winds as they can interrupt his flight path.

Buck Bumble

Buck Bumble doesn't seem to have many obvious weaknesses. He isn't perfect however. His technology can be easily disrupted. His homing weapons also aren't perfect as faster opponents can outspeed them as seen in Mission 15.

Verdict

Despite these being quite literally two Insects, the debate is far more interesting than one might think. I decided to split the debate into 4 categories which should be the most important factors, starting with…

Stats this category might be the most straightforward one Buck doesn't physically scale to much at all. He should upscale carrying 100 mg and can carry bombs and small Herd Units but other than that he doesn't have ways of fully scaling to his weaponry as he doesn't take on Herd units physically. Bucks weapons have destroyed big Herd Units which would put them at 958 Joules per shot but his weapons also can blast apart Bricks which would land them at 4312 Joules. Compare this to Rena kicking a door off its hinges which gets to 7175 Joules. Giving Mr. Moskeeto an edge in strength. Speed also doesn't look to be much different. Buck doesn't have many speed feats, the best one he has is a statement about being able to fly 3.5 m/s while Mr. Moskeeto flying into the horizon gets 5.36 m/s, not the biggest gap in the world but still notable nonetheless. Mr. Moskeeto takes Stats

Next up is Variety…and yeah this a pretty obvious sweep as well. Sure healing Items, increasing your total health and knowing Pressure is nifty but compare this to all the weapons and gadgets at Bucks disposal and you will find that Buck very easily takes Variety

One not so easily decided Category is Skill, while both have plenty of comparable experience in fighting life or death fights, Mr. Moskeeto is more experienced in fighting 1 on 1 battles. Buck however is more experienced in fighting opponents his own size. And while Buck has likely received more formal training thanks to his time in the army, Mr. Moskeeto has shown to be more than capable of keeping up with more skilled foes. Mr. Moskeeto is better close range while Buck holds the advantage in longer ranges. All in all both have different advantages in different situations and the constant back and forth means that Skill is a Tie.

The last deciding category will be counters. As in, what do these two have that can make the life of the opponent as difficult as possible. Bucks sheer variety would certainly keep Mr. Moskeeto on his toes… if not for the fact that he can resist and straight up tank a lot of it. Mr. Moskeeto has better durability than Buck and can always replenish his health, while Buck can do the same, Buck is limited by the amount of Ammo he has which isn't limitless for most Guns. Mr. Moskeeto can outspeed most projectiles shot at him  and has experience with being bombarded from all sides like in his fight with Kaneo where she was spraying bug repellent from everywhere and Mr. Moskeeto had to evade it. Mr. Moskeetos knowledge in pressure points also allows him to win the fight instantly once in close range. The speed advantage on top of the healing which helps him more than it helps Buck helps him close that gap. Overall Mr. Moskeeto counters Buck in every way that counts.

Conclusion

Mr. Moskeeto

Advantages:

  • Takes Stats no matter what
  • Can resist a lot of Bucks weaponry
  • Pressure points and close combat proficiency make him dangerous once close
  • Can evade Bucks homing weapons

Disadvantages:

  • Less varied
  • Doesn't have any range options
  • Less formally trained
  • All of his good feats come from a Japan exclusive game

Buck Bumble

Advantages:

  • Bigger and more combat applicable Arsenal
  • Mr. Moskeeto likely can't dodge some of his weapons…
  • Better trained formally
  • That theme

Disadvantages:

  • Is screwed if Mr. Moskeeto manages to close the gap
  • Loses in stats, especially physically
  • … but he can dodge the homing ones

While Buck certainly puts up one hell of a fight he can't manage to put down the Mosquitos' thirst for blood. Mr. Moskeetos overwhelming stats, experience with similarly skilled opponents and resistances means he wins this fight. Buck managed to save the entire Insect race, who could have known that it would be one of his own to rumble the biggity buck bumble

The winner is Mr. Moskeeto
